Melatonin is a hormone made from tyrptaphan that requires niacin (B3) to make melatonin and also serotonin. The melatonin is responsible for the stimulation and production of melanin (skin pigments) from melanocytes (cells in the skin). These hormones help to regulate the day/night cycle. Melatonin give us good continuous deep sleep. Serotonin give us a good mood with strong mental energy. Both give us a strong immune system.
People who take melatonin have lower rates of sickness and cancer. Melatonin is best taken an hour before sleep of the quick under tongue type can be taken right at bed time. It helps to set the "clock" of sleep so is best taken at this time. Some find that the effects takes a few doses to work and the first night is not greatly improved. Taking it for one week certainly gives the desired effect. Taking a break is not really necessary. We naturally have better levels in summer sun periods as the sun stimulates melanocytes with less utilization of melatonin. The pineal gland and cornea of the eye produce the most melatonin and again this is stimulated by sun light.
